“Epigenetic Marks on a Stress-Related Gene Linked to Suicide Risk"
"Many people consider suicide to be taboo, and it’s a subject that is often avoided. However, the more we understand the reasoning behind why some people are pressed to commit suicide, the better equipped we may be to offer support and guidance for treatment. Interestingly, certain lifestyles and various environmental factors might be able to influence a specific gene linked to stress, which could increase suicide risk in adults and even adolescents.
In a new study, researchers from Uppsala University, Karolinska Institutet, and Umeå University investigated the link between epigenetics and the severity of suicide attempts. They also assessed the pattern of epigenetic marks in adolescents at high-risk for mental illness.”
This is a great piece of news for Preventatism, because stress and suicide has been a subject for our theoretical approach to depression and suicide. Many years ago, we set up Preventatists groups to assist farmers in drought-affected areas, who were in danger of suicide because of the conditions in the area. This was successful, and other work in this area has been equally encouraging.
Preventatism is designed to prevent stress from creating the conditions for depression in the human mind and body. Stress does not cause depression, it just sets up the conditions in the body for depressive thoughts to arise, and not be dealt with. Especially chronic stress.
